Dua is the eldest child of her Kosovo Albanian parents with a younger sister Rina and a brother Gjin Lipa. Through her grandmother from her mom’s side, she is also Bosnian and her household is stated to be of Muslim origin. In terms of language, her native tongue is English with a British accent and she also speaks Albanian. Growing up Dua was influenced by her dad who is a lead singer and guitarist for the rock band Oda and Kosova while her mother trained in travel and tourism. Her father often played music at home including his own music and plenty of songs by classic artists such as Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Radiohead, and more.  It appears Dua’s father dabbled in quite a bit as before but he was pursuing a career in dentistry when they moved back to London her parents were simply trying to make ends meet for the family. Growing up in London Dua enjoyed her childhood and started singing herself at the young age of five. She credits this to her creative parents, especially her musician father who always had music playing at home as Dua told ABC news. In an interview she said that her parents never pressured her to pursue music, it just came naturally to a young Dua who enjoyed putting on-at-home concerts for her parents’ dinner guests. Either way, her parents have always been her biggest fans. Growing up in Hamstead London, Dua attended Fitzjohn’s Primary School and took music lessons learning the cello. When she auditioned to join the school choir the teacher told her she couldn’t sing which led Dua to start singing lessons at the age of nine. She took them on the weekends at the Sylvia Young Theater School. Before Dua was born her parents had just fled their native country Kosovo in 1982 and the war came.
