Early Life:

Nelly Kim Furtado was born on the 2nd of December 1978 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada to Potagues parents António José Furtado and Maria Manuela. The singer and songwriter didn’t necessarily come from a musical family but it seems like she knew it was her calling from a very young age and her mother did like to sing. Her mother Maria was a hotel cleaner while her father António worked as a stonemason. Inhaling from São Miguel Island in the Azores Portugal, they immigrated to Canada in the late 1960s. Nelly was named after Soviet gymnast Nellie Kim and her brother’s name is Michael Anthony Furtado she also has a sister Lisa Anne Furtado. All the siblings were raised Roman Catholic. Nelly Furtado began performing and singing first in Portagues at the age of four. Her first public performance was when she sang a duet with her mother at church on Portugal Day. The sounds of Nelly’s heritage had a strong influence on her even when she was listening to hip hop dance, pop R&B, Rock, as well as Brazilian and Indian music. When she wasn’t busy working as a maid helping out her mother, Nelly learned to play instruments in her free time. At the age of nine she started learning the trombone, and ukulele, then in later years came the guitar and keyboard. Nelly began writing her own songs by the age of 12 and as a teen, she was in a Portagues marching band. She credited her family as the source of her own strong work ethic considering she actually spent a total of eight summers working as a chambermaid with her mom and Victoria.

Career:

During a visit with her sister in Tronto in 1995, Nelly first met a member of the hip-hop group  Plains of Fascination, Tallis Newkirk. A year later she would contribute vocals to their album called  Join the Ranks on the track Waitin’ 4 the Streets.  After Nelly graduated from Mount Douglas Secondary School in 1996 she moved to Tronto to live with her sister Lisa and the year after she formed a trip-hop duo called Nelstar alongside Newkirk. In the end, Nelly believed the style of the musical duo was too segregated and didn’t accurately represent her persona or her vocal ability. She left the group with plans to move back to British Columbia. In 1997 Nelly performed at the Honey Jam talent show which attracted the attention of the singer Gerald Eaton of the band The Philosopher Kings, who then approached her to write some music with him. Gerald and another member of the group Brian West helped Nelly with producing a demo and while she left Tronto she did come back to record more material with them.
