Those seeking to upgrade their PS5 SSD can finally accomplish it owing to the Firmware Beta 2.0 update, which opened the console’s M.2 expansion connector. Digital Foundry stated in its tape that it employed the Samsung 980 Pro 500GB SSD, but that the results should apply to larger capacity 1TB and 2TB models as well, and it will be the same. According to a new study, upgrading your PS5’s internal SSD to an M.2 NVMe SSD can boost load speeds for PS4 games. As per a Digital Foundry analysis report, upgrading your PS5’s internal SSD to an M.2 NVMe SSD – in this case, a Samsung 980 Pro – can enable your console load and transfer faster and make you believe Ps5 loading times could get even better. The Samsung 980 Pro SSD, which meets all of Sony’s criteria and costs roughly $200 for a 1TB unit, was chosen by Digital Foundry for testing, which proved that Ps5 loading times could get even better! Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, a PS5 exclusive, operates nearly identically on both the base drive and the Samsung 980 Pro, according to testing. “The 980 Pro is fast enough to run taxing PS5 exclusives like Ratchet and Clank, and it delivers high-bandwidth scenarios exactly like the PS5’s default drive,” adds Thomas Morgan of Digital Foundry. In terms of loading times, the tech channel alleges that when playing PS4 games, the new Samsung 980 Pro transmitted faster load times than the PS5’s internal SSD. The team utilized Cyberpunk 2077 for this test and discovered that the game loaded roughly 3 seconds faster on the new SSD. Compared to the PS5’s stock drive, games like The Witcher 3, Fallout 4, and Cyberpunk 2077 have loading times reduced by 2-3 seconds. The exception being Battlefield 5, which loaded faster from the PS5’s basic storage. Both the standard drive and the Samsung 980 Pro loaded native PS5 games at about the same pace. That’s not shocking, given that the PS5 has some of the quickest loading times in the industry. If anything, the fact that an extra internal SSD can keep up is noteworthy.
The massive distinction between the transferring times
The highest discrepancy was found when transferring games between the two drives. Copying a game from the standard drive to the Samsung 980 Pro was substantially faster than transferring a game the opposite way, according to Digital Foundry’s testing.
Which users can improve their loading times?
The possibility to expand the internal SSD of the PS5 console is now only accessible in the initial software beta. Before it goes live to all console users, testers are putting the feature through its paces.

How about using a different SSD than those mentioned above?
Various SSDs will have different performance levels, according to Digital Foundry.
